Birthday Treat

Yesterday was Lin’s birthday so work disappeared for amoment. After enjoying a breakfast of boiled eggs (from our hens) with Marmite soldiers we decided to visit Wightwick Manor for the day.

The Manor is a glorious Victorian built home that was designed to look older. The exterior of the building is impressive but it is with the interior that its true glory can
be fully appreciated. The rooms inside are a shrine to the Pre-Raphaelite movement. The walls are covered with William Morris designed paper and fabric and each piece of furniture a living embodiment of Morris’ idea that,

“The secret of happiness lies in taking a genuine
interest in all the details of daily life, and in elevating them to art.”

On more than one occasion I felt that I was living the life of Dorian Gray but without my soul being corrupted. Each room had its own unique design and feel and yet the spirit of Rossetti, Burne-Jones and their brethren was always present.

We had a wonderful time and it is a place that we would definitely return to.
