Rain and Pirates

The Bank Holiday weekend has inevitably meant rain has fallen throughout but apart from the fact that not much work has been done on the allotment the long weekend has been a welcome break.

I went to see Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End yesterday and I have to say that it’s three hours of my life that I will never get back.  I thought that the first Pirates was a bit of incompetent fun and never saw the second film until Friday on DVD.  Dead Man’s Chest was a complete mess and had nothing vaguely resembling storytelling or filmmaking.  At World’s End (never has a film been more aptly named) carries on with the same incomprehensible nonsense.

Somebody please tell Johnny Depp to get back to real acting and if you thought that one unfunny Depp doing a rubbish Keith Richards impression was annoying then At World’s End offers Depp being annoying ten times in a pointless use of CGI cloning.  Saying that, there is one person worse at doing a Keith Richards impression than Depp is and that is Keith Richards who appears in the film briefly.  It should have been a welcome relief but his appearance was two hours into the film and it did nothing to prevent the yawns which increased as the film then took another hour to get from point nowhere to point nowhere.

I watched The Searchers today and the journey of a man discovering his own humanity took John Ford 114 minutes to accomplish.  All Pirates 3 managed was to demonstrate what a vapid, insipid actor Orlando Bloom is and that Kiera Knightley is about as convincing a pirate as Gore Verbinski is a director.

The sad thing is that the film will make a load of money and will strengthen the belief by studios that the public are gullible and that film companies don’t have to try and make a decent film.  They just have to create hype, throw in a few movie stars, lots of loud noise and CGI and you will make a killing.  The even sadder truth is that the public are gullible and that film makers really don’t have to try and make decent films.
