Doonesbury
I haven’t bought a newspaper for a number of years now. The reasons for this are too numerous to explain but suffice to say that I still manage to keep abreast of what is happening in this land and other lands without purchasing a tabloid or a broadsheet.
In those distant days when I did buy a newspaper I used to get The Guardian and it was not because I had any more faith in that newspaper to give impartial and in-depth analysis of world events than any other printed medium. There were two reasons why I bought it and they were for The Guide and for the Doonesbury strip.
For something that is so utterly about the United States I found Doonesbury (by Garry Trudeau) rather familiar and felt a kindred link to the myriad of characters. Due to listening to a Radio 4 programme about the strip (download of programme available at Speechification.com), I have re-kindled my desire to follow the daily four frame stories.
There is a lot to catch up due to Doonesbury existing for thirty-five years but I aim to read all the strips since its first publication so I may be some time.
