Pond Life

Most of my week off from work has been spent at the allotment helping my good lady who is pretty much maintaining the plot whilst I spend time on the computer. But I did manage to get my wellies on this week and have been creating a wildlife pond.

We have a very tiny pond at home so it was decided that a much more substantial pond ought to be built on our allotment plot. The hard bit was digging the hole which approximately measures 3 metres by 2.5 metres and the deepest point being around 80cm.

We then moulded a “shelf” all the way round so that plants could be placed later and there was also a gradual sloping at one end so that wildlife could climb in and out easily. The next step was to get pond liner and ensure that everything was water tight. The next bit was the easiest and that’s just sticking the hosepipe in and waiting for the pond to fill.

Water everywhere

Once the water reached the necessary depth it was a question of cutting off the surplus liner and then being creative with bits of logs that were left laying around the allotment. This was the most satisfying part as one could see the pond take shape. One thing that our little plot of land doesn’t lack is stones so they were used to create a beach effect at the shallowest point.

There is still quite a bit to do but that’s mainly to do with picking the right plants for the area but I will leave that part to my other half who knows way more about these things than I do.

All we need are plants

I rather looking forward to completing it but the real designer will then come into action and that is nature itself who will bring a variety of life into the water. I can’t wait to see what nature will bring.
